Dominic Serres

French painter, 1722-1793

The parents of Dominique Serres wanted him to enter the priesthood, but he ran off to sea; was captured by the English in 1752 and was brought to London. He became a successful painter of seascapes and naval engagements. When the Royal Academy was founded in 1768 Serres was immediately admitted to membership.
