Image description

The so called "Star Disk of Nebra", dated to the early Bronze age (about 3,600 years old) is seen after it was identified as the oldest picture of the firmament world wide, based on exact astronomical measurements and obervations at the State Museum for Prehistory in the eastern German town of Halle September 27, 2002. The gold foil ornaments are arranged to create a picture of the firmament showing stars, the sun or moon. The bronze disc consequently shows the world wide oldest cosmological picture known. It is thought to be older than the Eqyptian pictures of the firmament that are known from pharaonic graves. The disk and other bronze objects were discovers near Nebra, about 270 kilometres south west of Berlin by local looters in July 1999 during illegal excavations of a possible cult monument.
