Contents Note: Extracts from the treaties of 1763 and 1786 between Britain and Spain are printed in the left margin. From the mid-seventeenth century poor Britons (including the buccaneer and explorer William Dampier) settled Yucatan to cut logwood, from which dye was extracted. Spain claimed sovereignty over the whole region and, despite the Treaties of 1763 and 1786, was hostile to their presence.
