Iraqi Gypsies squat in an abandoned military compound where they have been forced to make their home in the Baghdad suburb of Abu Ghraib July 12, 2003. The piles of dusty rubble, stretching across a couple of square kilometres on the western fringes of Baghdad, suggest the aftermath of a particularly devastating bombing raid in the Iraq war. But people from surrounding areas proudly declare they demolished this Gypsy neighbourhood with just sledgehammers, shovels and their bare hands after the war was over.
