Image description

Winefred Redmond, nee Dowling (d. 1861) was convicted and sentenced to transportation for life with her sister Elizabeth (their offence is not known) and arrived in Sydney on the Atlas in July 1802. On 17 September, 1802, Winefred married Francois Durinault (also known as de Riveau), a French prisoner of war who Governor King employed in winegrowing at Parramatta. In mid 1803 their son, Jean, was born. Following the Vinegar Hill uprising in 1804, Durinault was sent to England on suspicion of conspiring in the uprising. He was not heard of again. Winefred married Edward Redmond (1766?-1840), her second husband, in 1811. Her son became known as John Redmond, and two daughters were born, Mary (ca 1807), and Sarah (1809-1873). Sarah later became the wife of Captain John Larking Scarvell (1791-1861). Edward, convicted as an Irish rebel, had been transported for life to NSW and arrived in Sydney on the Minerva in January 1800. He received a conditional pardon in 1803, and an absolute pardon in 1809 which was confirmed in 1813. He became a wealthy publican and landowner with diverse business interests.
