Image description

Sambenitos worn by Auto-da-Fe penitents during the Spanish Inquisition. These were tunics indicating the sentence handed down to each penitent. From left, the sambenito, worn by one who had confessed his sins and thus escaped burning. Centre, the fuego revolto for one who had been condemned but later confessed. He would be strangled before being burned. Right, the samarra, worn by one condemned to be burned at the stake.
