Although the last few days have been precipitated, which is said to have put an end to the longest dry period of the century, as the rainless period of recent months is called, the soil is still completely dry to a considerable depth and so hard that ploughing for winter sowing is a difficult problem for farmers. Before the plough can start, the soil has to be artificially watered and loosened. A farmer has filled the manure tank with water and sprinkles the meadow, which is designated for ploughing up and growing winter wheat. Recorded in Switzerland in October 1972.
