Thomas Gainsborough was one of Britain's most important landscape artists. In the early 1750s, he was painting small informal landscapes in a naturalistic style that was new in British art. This style was influenced by 17th century Dutch landscape paintings. Dutch features in this picture include the high bank that divides the composition, the furrows leading into the distance, and the wide expanse of sky. The ploughman later became a favourite feature of Gainsborough's landscapes;
