His red slippers provide a patch of bright colour, which is picked up by the traces of red in the proggy mat. Firelight throws a rosy glow on his features, and shines on the kettle on the hob and the pewter tankard beside his elbow. Thomas Cliff was Parish Clerk of the village of Lydon, Northumberland;
