Image description

FBI and U.S. Postal Service investigators, sifting through unopened letters to members of Congress, have found a letter addressed to the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee that appears to contain anthrax spores, the FBI said November 16, 2001. The letter addressed to Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, appeared to be almost identical to another anthrax-laced letter sent last month to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, a South Dakota Democrat. Two postal workers employed at the facility that processed the two letters died last month. The letter, which has not yet been opened by investigators and whose sender is unknown, has the same post date and Trenton, New Jersey, postmark, "and appears in every respect to be similar to the other anthrax-laced letters," the FBI said in a statement. Leahy is shown in a January 16, 2001 file photo. REUTERS/Gary Hershorn-Files GMH/HB
