Image description

German President Karl Kobelt, second from left, will talk to Lieutenant Colonel Hans Bracher, left, and Minister Harrison from the USA, third from left, and US General Ralph Tate, right, at the military airfield Unterbach near Meiringen on November 24. Kobelt flew over the accident site on the Gauligletscher in the afternoon and then greeted the rescued passengers of the crashed Dakota C-53 in Unterbach. On 19 November 1946 an American military aircraft, a Douglas C-53 Dakota (military version of the DC-3), crashed onto the Gauligletscher in the Bernese Oberland with twelve persons on board. All passengers involved in an accident can be rescued alive after an elaborate rescue operation. The two Swiss military pilots Victor Hug and Pista Hitz bring the accident victims to safety with two Fieseler Storch aircraft of the Swiss Army at the airfield Unterbach near Meiringen
