Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Bruce, 3rd Earl of Elgin & 2nd Earl of Ailesbury (1656-1741), after François Harrewijn (Brussels 1700 – Brussels 1764). Inscribed in later 18th-century hand with name of Earl of Scarborough, bottom right: Richard, 2d. Viscount Lumley, 1689/Earl of Scarborough, 1690./d.1721./father of Julia Lady Conyers. A three-quarter-length portrait of an elderly man, turned to the righ, gazing at the spectator, wearing a long powdered wig, blue and gold brocade coat, the sleeves of which are visible, and peer's robes, holding an Earl's coronet in both hands; background with base of pilasters, etc. Contemporary copy; the original painting is in the possession of the present Marquess of Ailsbury at Savernake.
