The wheat harvest generally took place in late August or September. Gleanings were leftover stalks gathered by hand after the main harvest had taken place. The old woman in this picture is using a wooden threshing tool to beat the seed free from the stalks. For larger quantities, steam threshing was beginning to be used at this time.
