Story of Gideon (Gedeon): Joash is informed that Gideon has destroyed the altar of Baal. late 16th c. (371 x 403 cm). GIDEON. Judge and warrior of the Hebrews. Second tapestry in the series 'Story of Gideon'. Old Testament (Judges 6, 25-32). Detail depicting the cutting down of the Asherah by Gideon and his men following the commandment of Yahweh, to fight against idol worship by the people of Israel. Asherah was the Phoenician goddess of vegetation, female counterpart of Baal, and was represented as a tree trunk.
