ARCHAEOLOGICAL RUINS AT DZIBILNOCAC IN THE YUCATAN, 2002-09-01 (photo)

A structure in the arqueological ruins at Dzibilnocac in the Yucatan is seen in this September 1, 2002 photo. Mexican Mayan farmer Diego Uc was arrested at put in prison for 9 months after using seemingly random rocks to build with on his land. Authorities prosecuted Diego Uc for violating a national monument, as the rocks he had used were in fact of this pre-Hispanic archaeological site, about a mile away from his home. Uc was never formally informed that he could not use the rocks, which were on his property for building and as a poor Mayan farmer, who speaks weak Spanish, was badly equiped to defend himself in court.
