This is one of many views of Italy painted by the London artist George Hering. It was based on studies he made during a long visit to Italy in the 1830s. The bright sunlit scene of the path by the lake is contrasted with the dark chasm falling away beneath the bridge on the left. Views of spreading cypress trees and blue Italian skies frequently appeared in exhibitions of paintings held in London at this time.
