Richard Hesketh was a landscape painter who lived and worked on Tyneside in the late 19th and early 20th century. He painted many views of the Lake District in Cumbria, including this scene in Upper Eskdale. The rushing river which fills the foreground of the picture can be traced back to a tiny stream, which tumbles down the mountains rising in the background. The small sheep to the right show how large and powerful the river has become;
