End of British territory showing Afghanistan, 1919. Photograph by Randolph Bezzant Holmes (1888-1973), 3rd Afghan War, 1919. The border between British India and Afghanistan, the Durand Line, had long been a contentious issue between the two nations prior to the 3rd Afghan War (1919). The Khyber Pass in particular was the source of much tension. The Afghans regarded the line there as passing through Landi Khana, whereas the British believed it ran through Torkham, five miles farther west. From an album of 56 photographs, including 5 loose, 9th Bn Middlesex Regiment.
