Small areas of colour appear comparatively bright against the subdued greys and browns around them. Dabs of paint create a sense of movement. The shape of the Low Light lighthouse at North Shields has been sketched in the background. George Horton was born at North Shields, and was the most important local watercolour artist of the early 20th century. He painted this view many times.
