Add. 5412, part 2, Deed of Sale from Ravenna, 3 June 572 (papyrus)

The British Library’s largest papyrus is over 2 metres long and features a deed of sale, Ravenna, 3 June 572: Add MS 5412 Deed of sale made in Ravenna on behalf of hayward (agellarius), coming from Cesena (in the neighbourhood of Ravenna) named Domninus, to a court officer of Ravenna named Deusdedit. Domninus sells to Deusdedit five twelfths of a small estate (fundus) and two twelfths of a farmhous (casale). The two properties are called Custinis and Bassianum respectively and are sold at the price of five gold solidi. Five witnesses sign the deed: Pascalis (palatinus sacrarum largitionum); Eugenius (palatinus sacrarum largitionum); Moderatus (comitiacus); Andreas (augustalis); Vitalis (cerearius). The notary (forensis) is named Flavius Iohannis. Three lines of writing are detectable on the verso: they contain an endorsement of the data given in the recto and probably deal with an ancient preservation system.
