Eight-year-old labourer Tanjila Khatoon breaks pieces of coal in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta on June 21, 2001. She is among about 1,000 child labourers paid 10 to 15 rupees (20 to 30 U.S. cents) a day by her employer, who buys coal from factories and sells smaller pieces to households. India estimates that about 18 million children work instead of going to school, though children rights activists say that there are about 55 million children working in hazardous industries. Citing practical difficulties, India says it aims to eradicate child labour by the year 2020.
