Image description

Abed Joudeh, a Moslem Palestinian, holds the 800-year-old key to the huge wooden doors of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (behind), where according to tradition Jesus Christ was crucified and buried, which earlier November 22 was closed to the visiting public. Christian leaders in the Holy Land ordered all churches closed for two days beginning today after Israel decided to allow Moslems to build a mosque near the main church in Nazareth, the boyhood town of Jesus Christ. The three main churches in Israel and the West Bank are closed bringing pilgrims walking in the footsteps of Jesus to a halt. Abed Joudeh is the official custodian of the key to the Holy Sepulchre, a title his family has held since 1187 when Saladin, a Moslem hero, ousted the crusaders from Jerusalem.
