Image description

US Marines adjust the range of their light mortar in a 'fighting hole' at a forward position at the US Marine operations base in southern Afghanistan early December 5, 2001 morning when an alert is announced. Most of the marines on this base are eager to see action against the Taliban and al Qaeda forces. Marines at this area are with Charlie 1/1 of the 15th MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) and are with a small mortar company protecting the extreme north line of the base. The were the first forces to arrive November 25 when Charlie 1/1 took command of this secret airstrip, and have been living in their fighting holes with a few hours sleep taken in shifts.
