Ultra-orthodox Jews recite a special prayer during a massive "mass prayer" protest February 14 held against what they claim is religious persecution by Israel's Supreme Court. The protest, held by some 300,000 religious Jews, is one of the largest ever held in Jerusalem and turned many of the streets at the entrance to the city into a sea of black hats and coats. A counter demonstrations drawing tens of thousands of Jews was held a few hundred meters (yards) away supporting religious pluralism and the Supreme Court decisions in the cultural battle raging over Israel's identity 50 years after its creation as a state conceived as both Jewish and democratic.
