Legend has it that there were trees in Scotland which produce a fruit enveloped in leaves, when the fruit drops into the water at a suitable time it takes life and is turned into a live bird, which is called a tree-bird. The young ducks open the fruits in order to escape whilst the newly hatched ones swim in the water. From The Universe or, The Infinitely Great and the Infinitely Little, published 1882.
