Switzerland Earthquake Obwalden, 1964 (b/w photo)

In the College of Sarnen, Canton Obwalden, a monk controls the oscilloscript, which measures earthquakes and vibrations, recorded on 19 March 1964. In early 1964, earth tremors kept the Canton Obwalden in suspense for weeks. On 17 February the earth trembled for the first time in the Sarnen/Kerns area. Fireplaces and bricks fell from the roofs. Cracks appeared in the masonry of buildings. Early in the morning on March 14th, the strongest shot was fired. A total of five million francs of property damage was caused, and there were no deaths or injuries.
