The Winter War 1939-40 (b/w photo)

The Winter War. A military conflict between the Soviet union and Finland. It began with a Soviet invasion on november 1939 when Soviet infantery crossed the border on the Karelian Isthmus. About 9500 Swedish volunteer soldiers participated in the war. Pictured a young woman on top of a building in Helsinki. She is part of the air defense personnel and has the important task to monitor and report any enemy aircrafts. The weather during the war was exteremely cold and was as low as minus 40 degrees. She is therefore wearing a warm fur coat. January 1940
