Creator: Lowry, Laurence Stephen (1887-1976) Drawing, pencil and pen and ink (felt-tip, black) on paper, entitled Newcastle upon Tyne, by the artist Laurence Stephen Lowry. In the foreground a group of people wait on the riverbank for the Blyth Ferry, on the opposite side of the river. Ferry landing visible on opposite bank, with houses behind and a steam train. Blyth was one of Lowry's favourite places. Its industrial character and coastal setting appealed to him greatly. He also had a particular liking for ferries and made several drawings of this chain ferry at Blyth. In the distance is steam-hauled coal train carries wagons from Cambois Colliery to the loading staiths.
