Front view of Al-Kharrana from south; the castle was built in the early Umayyad period by the caliph Walid 1st; qasr al-Kharana is an important example of early Islamic art and architecture; it is a synthesis of different traditional styles that shows the influence of the once new islamic religion; this creates a new style; the entire stucture is typical of sirian architecture, influenced itstelf by roman and byzantin style, with several rooms placed around the main room or the main courtyard; the outside, visible in this photo, is a solid structure in squared stone with narrow crenels, the entrance is in the middle of the long side of the wall; at the corners and in the middle of the perimetral walls there are massive circular defence towers.
