LOURDES SANDIVAR FROM PERU AWAITS DEPORTATION IN FLORIDA, 2003-01-20 (photo)

Lourdes Sandivar from Peru sits in her Hollywood, Florida home January 20, 2003. Sandivar, 37, is wearing an ankle bracelet as part of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detention and Removal pilot program. The bracelet helps to monitor aliens who are out on bond while they await their hearings before an Immigration Judge or while an appeal of a removal order is pending. Sandivar's husband is already at Miami's Krome detention center. The Peruvian couple, who have lived in Florida since 1993, lost their appeal for political asylum in 2002. They're fighting deportation on the grounds of their health problems, the fact that they have two American children, one of them with mental problems, and that they are homeowners and have no criminal records.
