GUATEMALAN JOURNALISTS ARE SEEN AFTER BEING RELEASED BY FORMER PARAMILITARIES, 2003-10-28 (photo)

Linares was one of four journalists were seized last Sunday by a rag-tag band of paramilitaries, who were demanding payment for their role in Guatemala's civil war. The group had threatened to kill them, but they were released unharmed. The war claimed some 200,00 lives before the government and leftist rebels signed a peace accord in 1996. During the conflict, hundreds of thousands of mostly Mayan paramilitaries were forced into so-called civil defense patrols to help the Guatemalan army fight guerrilla forces.
