In the summer of 1851, Marstrand went to Sweden to paint a monumen-tal canvas for the Royal painting collection: Churchgoers Arriving by Boat at the Parish Church of Leksand on Siljan Lake, Sweden. At the same time, he made several small-format paintings inspired from this wild region of central Sweden. Here, he portrays a kulla, a young woman from Dalecarlia, ri-ding a small white horse bareback and barefoot. Aside from these works, Swedish ethnographic subjects are rare in 19th-century Da-nish art.
