Image description

Creator: John Robert Mather Signed, inscribed and dated by the artist. Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection. The ship depicted is almost certainly 'L'Antonio' (see ZBA2756 for an engraving), 'the celebrated piratical slaver' painted in oils by the Plymouth marine artist Nicholas Matthew Condy (1818-51) and issued as an engraving in 1845. John Robert Mather was born in Newcastle. He went to sea as a boy and rose to have a command. By 1862 he was painting professionally and exhibiting watercolours regularly at the Society of British Artists, London.
