Image description

Dr Andre Keyser (L) and Rosalind Smith (R) unveil a pair of 1.5 to 2.0 million-year-old homonid fossils found west of Johannesburg, April 26. The fossil on the right, christened Eurydice, is the most complete apeman skull ever excavated and described and belongs to a female from the hominid specimen Paranthropus robustus. The lower jaw bone on the left, named Orpheus, belongs to a male of the same species. The hominids belong to a primarily vegetarian line believed to have gone extinct about one million years ago and are not believed to be direct ancestors of modern humans. The pair are considered therefore to be a failed attempt at human evolution.
