FLAG AT SMITH POINT FLIES AT HALF MAST ON TWA CRASH ANNIVERSARY, 1996-07-17 (photo)

An American flag flies at half-mast over a memorial model of TWA Flight 800 at Smith Point Park beach in Shirley July 17. Today is the second anniversary of the crash of TWA flight 800, which exploded over the waters off the Long Island, New York, beach July 17, 1996, killing all 230 passengers and crew members aboard. The cause of the crash of the Paris bound flight has yet to be officially determined, however it is thought that a possible explosion in the center fuel tank of the 747 jumbo jet shortly after take off from New York's JFK Airport caused the plane to crash into the Atlantic Ocean.
