Smith, nicknamed "the wizard" for revolutionizing defensive play with his acrobatic fielding stayle, was a 14-time all-star who played 19 seasons in the major leagues with the San Diego Padres (1978-81) and St. Louis Cardinals (1982-96). Smith, who was inducted on his first year of eligibility, earned 13 Gold Gloves, holds six major league fielding records among shortstops, had 2,460 hits, 580 stolen bases and played in three world series.
