Image description

Coronation follies. A bricklayer from Dudley, also caught up in the decorative frenzy that swept England for the Queen's solemn investiture, modeled in plaster the images of the five pirates of the first Elizabeth, Drake, Raleigh, Hawkins, Frobisher and Grenville then placed them on a small wall in her garden. At dawn on a rainy morning the mayor and the city councilors who were returning from a night session, suddenly found themselves in front of those five white faces and, pretended for ghosts, ran away with your legs off. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 7 June 1953.
