Meeting on the North Pole. Two SAS four-engines; the Guttorm Viking, which started from Copenhagen and headed for Tokyo, and the Reidar Viking, travelling in the opposite direction, inaugurated the shortest route between Japan and Europe via the so-called polar shortcut, covering 12,800 km in less than 31 hours. The luminaires, two DC7-Cs, crossed near the geographic North Pole, in a sky slightly cleared by the Northern Lights. From one of them, a cylinder with a microfilm reproducing the first pages of the 700 most important newspapers in the world was launched on the ice. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 10 March 1957.
