Image description

The dramas of the sea. A violent fire destroyed the English liner Empire-Windrush off the coast of Algeria. Fortunately, just at the time when the fire broke out, the sea, until then in storm, suddenly calmed down and so did the 1268 passengers, mostly soldiers who repatriated with their families from Far East, and all the crew, minus four train drivers, were rescued. The fire took place at dawn when a masked ball was still taking place on board offered by the ship's commander, so several ladies had to go down in the boats in an evening dress or even in a mask. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 11 April 1954.
