Image description

The most responsible for the Fosse Ardeatine massacre, that is, the German generals Maeltzer and von Mackensen, tried in Rome by the Allied Court Martial. In the spring of 1944, following an attack, they had ordered that 10 Italian hostages should be slaughtered for every German killed. The terrible death list included 320 victims, mostly innocent. Then (by mistake!) There were 15 more people slaughtered, that is, 335. Among the two defendants (von Mackensen in civilian clothes and Maeltzer in uniform) an interpreter. The man in the wig is one of the judges. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 1 December 1946.
