Artist: The Mortlake Tapestry Manufactory; After: Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506) Musicians followed by trophy bearers and a group carrying vessels, the spoils of Caesar's wars, the rear with a youth with a garlanded sacrificial bull followed by trumpeters bearing ribbons inscribed 'S.P.Q.R. Julius Caesar P.M.' and 'S.P.Q.R. Julio Caesari D P P P', the Coliseum on a hill beyond surrounded by ruins, shield to bottom left. From a set of three Charles II Mortlake tapestries depicting the Triumph of Julius Caesar with added borders of trophies of armour, helmets, breastplates, pikes, maces, etc. with double-eagles in the angles and the middle of the top borders, each panel bearing the Mortlake shield mark, each reduced at the bottom above the borders. After designs by Mantegna, from the cartoons at Hampton Court, this set was probably produced in 1670. Woven at Mortlake for Ralph, Duke of Montagu for Montagu House, Bloomsbury.
