The American Soldier. Composed of still photos and short video images of the history of the American Soldier. The most notable of these images are: 4-second clip of an American city in the late 1930' or early 1940's, 5-second point of view clip from train engine looking at rear of train traveling ahead, 2-second view of American tanks rolling down Champs-Elysees with Arc de Triomphe in background cutting to marching American soldiers for additional 8-seconds from a different angle without the Arc de Triomphe in the background. 1st Infantry Division WWII. The first landing for the 1st Infantry Division was at Oran, Algiers coast of North Africa as part of Operation Torch. Battle scenes as the 1st infantry Division took part in combat at Kasserine Pass, El Guettar, and Mateur finally meeting up with Montgomery's British 8th Army helping secure Tunisia. 3-second clip of German Field Marshal Rommel in a Scout Car, Artillery flashes at night silhouetting advancing infantry, 7-second 1st Infantry meeting British 8th Army. Second landing was Operation Husky the Allied invasion of Sicily. The 1st Div landed at Gela. Aerial view of Troina before and destruction of town after capture by American troops. The big Red One returns to England to prepare for the Normandy Invasion. Shows naval bombardment. The 1st Infantry div. landed on Omaha Beach. Excellent 13-second clip of Omaha Beach on D-Day. Shows tanks and Infantry fighting the Germans in the hedgerows of France. 5-second clip of two soldiers digging a fox hole. Shows the 1st driving across France in a continuous offensive finally reaching the German border at Aachen. 5-second clip of Combat Engineers digging up a German mine. Shows Siegfried Line near Aachen. Shows the street by street and house by house battle for and the capture of Aachen. Battle scenes in the Hurtgen Forest. Scenes from a brief rest area. When the Wacht Am Rhein offensive, commonly called the Battle of The Bulge, suddently broke loose the 1st Div. raced to the Ardennes to help blunt and turn back the German offensive. Brief scenes from the Battle of the Bulge. After this battle the 1st attacked and drove on to the Rhine crossing at the Remagen bridgehead on the bridge at Remagen. The 1st Div. was in Czechoslovakia when the war ended.
