A child labourer carries unbaked bricks to a kiln at a brick factory in Raichak, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of the Indian city of Calcutta, December 27, 2000. Children are paid 40 rupees ($0.86) for every 1,000 bricks they carry about 30 metres across the factory grounds, though most can only manage about 250 bricks a day, since each weighs about 2 kilograms (4 #6 ounces). Indian authorities estimate that about 18 million children work instead of going to school, though child rights activists put the figure at about 55 million children, many in hazardous industries. Citing practical difficulties, India says it aims to eradicate child labour by 2020. JS/JD
