Image description

September 4, 1965 - Lambarene, Gabon, Africa - ALBERT SCHWEITZER, (January 14, 1875 - September 4, 1965) was a German, and later French, theologian, organist, philosopher, physician, and medical missionary in Africa, also known for his interpretive life of Jesus. Schweitzer, a Lutheran, challenged both the secular view of Jesus as depicted by historical-critical methodology current at his time in certain academic circles, as well as the traditional Christian view. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of 'Reverence for Life'. From 1952 until his death he continuously reached for truth, peace, freedom and humanity. He fought for prosecuted and threatened people and again and again spoke out loudly against the arms race and against the danger of atomic wars. Schweitzer died on September 4, 1965 at the hospital he built with a station for Hansen's disease, which he paid for on his own, in Lambarene, Gabon, Africa. He is buried there with his wife.
