Marisol Escobar (b. 1930) won the sculpture competition to create a memorial to the American Merchant Mariners' in 1988. The figures are based upon an actual historical event. During the Second World War a Nazi U-boat attacked a merchant marine vessel. While the mariners clung to their sinking vessel, the Germans photographed their victims. Marisol developed her figures from these photographs. They were dedicated in 1991.
