Image description

The castle was built between the 12th and 16th centuries, with patching work carried out post-medieval. The earliest parts were built by Earl William, and from 1332 the castle was held by the Percy family. The castle has a triangular plan, built over a previous motte-and-bailey, with five towers bolstering the curtain wall. In the centre of the site is the Collegiate Church which divides the wards, with the Outer Ward in the south, and Inner Ward in the north. To the west of the ruined internal walls is the Lion Tower, a square three storey block with a round-headed east entrance and a relief carving of the Percy Lion. It served as a porch to the north end of the hall. To the south is the Little Stair Tower, a second porch to the hall, with the stone spire still intact. In the foreground are low ruined walls and a groundskeeper.
