Autograph:1746 letter from William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland to Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle and Secretary of State. Written a week after the battle of Culloden (16 April 1746). William Augustus expresses his gratification on having been 'an instrument in the affair' and on the fact that the victory was won by the British troops alone and without Hessian aid. He advocates a complete change in the system of government in Scotland, and states his belief that Lord Lovat will be captured. Written at Inverness, 23 April 1746. Signature: William Augustus.
