British Prisoners released by the Boers, marching to Pretoria, South Africa', 1901. One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a professional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques; cameras were more portable and magazines reproduced half-tone photographs. The Boers captured British officers and men as they enjoyed success on the battlefield in the early part of the war. After mid 1900, as the British advanced into the Boer Republics and the Boers switched to a mobile guerrilla war, many of the British prisoners were released. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
