Image description

Canberra aircraft production: men fit canopy to cockpit, Preston,1956. The Canberra was conceived at the end of WWII when there was a great need for a fast, high altitude, medium bomber,. After five years in development, the Canberra was first produced in Preston in 1949 and later at nearby Warton. The aircraft was well in to production by 1956 when this photograph was taken. The aircraft which had a crew of 3, was designed as a jet engined medium bomber. The Canberra had a range of 3000 miles and was exported to many countries, it is acknowledged worldwide as a great military aircraft. Some of the early Canberras were still being used by the RAF for reconnaissance nearly fifty years after entering service. Photograph by Walter Nurnberg (1907-1991) who transformed industrial photography after WWII using film studio lighting techniques. Photographie ©SSPL/NMeM/Walter Nurnberg
