United States of America A caricature with the title 'Tug of War' illustrates the efforts of the American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to convince the American congress to give up its isolationist position. Behind Roosevelt tugging on the rope stands a figure which symbolizes the British diplomatic corps and which supports the American president in his efforts. The caricature originates from the Chicago Tribune newspaper. Isolationism, which won the upper-hand in congress in the 30s especially during Hitler's seizure of power and which functioned to keep the USA from entering into a world war again like in WWI, was consistently repressed by the President during the constantly growing international tensions.
